Click below to hear a story being told in Kumeyaay.  My plan is to have the entire story and translation, one day.  The tape and translation is supplied by Margaret Langdon who had done a lot of research on the Kumeyaay language.  This is just a small fragment.  This is a real native speaker from Santa Ysabel, passed away many years ago.  Better than listening to me all the time.

Mouse over the hear the story and click to see the word for word translation.

This is the first sentence of the story.  There is an official translation but when I listen to it I can't hear all the words in the official translation.  Some parts are really garbled like the first two words.  I can hear the Enyaach but not the second word meaning story. This is a good example of what field work is really like.  Conditions are not always perfect and elders are not file cabinets.  They talk about what they want to talk about and the wind blows, dogs bark and people cut in.

This sentence says that her father was at this place that is now called.

This one seems to be cut at the end

Here is the ENTIRE recording.

More stuff to be used later
